John Ford Fitzgerald
(June 11, 1957 - February 19, 2025)

Sergeant John Ford Fitzgerald, 67, of Waynesboro, VA, became a new gatekeeper in Heaven on February 19, 2025.

John graced the world with his presence on June 11, 1957. He was born to and preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Shirley Fitzgerald. He was also preceded in death by his beloved riding buddy, a chocolate toy poodle named Coco.

He leaves behind a beloved daughter, Angie Fitzgerald, whom he shared with Stephanie Mawyer, and his most cherished companion, his chihuahua Bruno. He also leaves behind a beloved sister, Bev Kidd, as well as many other family members.

John graduated from Blue Ridge Community College with an Associates Degree. He was very proud of the time he spent in the Civil Air Patrol. He found his calling to protect and serve with the Waynesboro Police Department in 1978, from which he retired as a sergeant after 30 years of service. He also worked as an animal control officer on the side for WPD for many years, training many people in the process.

One of his favorite pastimes was deer hunting. He was very proud of the 12-pointer he shot with a bow that he had mounted. After retirement, he enjoyed thrifting, meeting people when he set up at the Waynesboro Flea Market and yard sale events, and going to yard sales.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at Augusta Memorial Park, officiated by Pastor William Ludors.
